What are PRIMARY SOURCES or SECONDARY SOURCES of information?
|
A PRIMARY SOURCE is any piece of information that is used for constructing history. It can include someone who witnessed first-hand or was part of the historical events or can also include physical objects like coins, journal entries, letters, or newspaper articles. A SECONDARY SOURCE is generally a historical description built up from primary sources. Examples books, magazines and documentaries. Example of a SECONDARY SOURCE: the book “THE THINGS
THEY CARRIED” BY Tim O'Brien 10-02-05 Amazon customer Book review: The novel “The Things They Carried” by Tim O'Brien is a fictional but not totally untrue story of the perils faced by young soldiers fighting a foreign war for an unknown reason. This novel is in fact a collection of individual stories that are all based in truth but have been changed so that they are told as the author's own, when in actuality they were his stories as well as his comrades' The various stories deal with everything from the mental and sensational burdens of war to the superstitions of young men thrown into what you might call a forgotten chaotic tragedy. This book is truly a great testament to all those men who have fallen in the line of duty and for our country; even more so for those men of a lost generation who abruptly lost there innocence and were thrown into a conflict that they nether supported, nor understood. Written by Matthew ward This book a SECONDARY SOURCE of information should be compared and contrasted with witnesses who are our guests today who have first-hand knowledge “of the perils faced by young soldiers fighting a foreign war.” These witnesses represent a PRIMARY SOURCE of information. |

DISCUSSION: ASK QUESTIONS
|
• What if I am given
an order I think is unfair and I disobey it? • Can I quit the military if I am not happy? • Can I still be a soldier but choose only to pursue the career I signed up for and NOT go into battle? • Suppose I do not like my situation and I tell whoever will listen of my bad situation, can I get in trouble? |
