Chapter 60

The Al Warren Tappan Zee Chapter of the Lower Hudson Valley

VFP Chap. 60 1st Mondays 7:30 PM at F.O.R. Nyack Contact: Mike Gillen

Tappan Zee Brigade (VFP-VVAW) - Meeting

Movement news: Ben described ANSWER's split from IAC and
the formation of Troops Out Now Coalition. We agreed that
our relations with both groups should be one of polite communication.
.Ben reported on the Peace Zone-New York City initiative from United For Peace & Justice. The initiative has four components: a City Council resolution
against the war, municipal and pension fund divestment of Halliburton interests, counter-recruitment, and supporting veterans and military families. For veterans: the Peace Zone supports keeping all the city's veterans
hospitals open and their services staffed and funded, passing the depleted uranium testing and treatment legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (A-9116), and asking that the City Council's veterans committee hold hearings on the city's services for veterans.

Ben reported on the Martin Luther King Institute's counter-recruitment committee in Westchester. The committee has started a "adopt-a-school" approach, recruiting individuals to take on the responsibility of keeping track of a single school, making sure that counter-recruitment literature is available and acting as a contact for teachers interested in speakers. This project has been slow starting.

Depleted uranium: Joan Walker walks point on this. The legislative initiative needs a Republican Senate sponsor. Jim is working on Senator Thomas Morahan (38th Senate District/Rockland-Orange) and will make contact also with VVA and state DVA folks.

Sir No Sir: Shirley reported on the planning meeting for the April premiere. The producer hopes to pack the first- run theater for a week to promote other bookings. She played the trailer, and it looks very good.

Counter-recruitment: Jim reviewed the work he has orchestrated this year in city and suburban schools. He estimates that during the year he and his co-conspirators have talked to perhaps 10,000 young people (compared to
the 300,000 high school students in the city alone). He keeps a list of interested teachers and also works with the New York Collective of Radical Educators <www.nycore.org>. (NYCoRE has taken on DeWitt Clinton
in the Bronx and Aviation High in Queens as special projects.) He always needs reliable speakers, and has been working with IVAW to help in making presentations.

Dayl Wise communique: Dayl wants more frequent meetings. We do too. We will have a meeting at Clearwater, which is Father's Day weekend, June 17-81. Ben will poll members about where else we might meet. Possibilities include New Paltz. George and Anne have offered to host a meeting at their home in Monroe, tentatively set for Sunday 4/9. Shirley can report on the Gulf Coast march.

3rd Anniversary: Jim and Shirley expect to be on the Gulf Coast. On Saturday 3/18 in New York City, there is a counter-recruitment action in the Bronx on Fordham Road, followed by a gathering at Lehman College. Also on Saturday 3/18 in Westchester County, there are 10am visits to three congressional offices (Engel, Lowey, Kelly), followed by a 1pm rally in Tibbets Park at Main & North Broadway in White Plains. If anyone plans to go to one of these events, contact Mike Gillen (914.948.8983) <mgillen@pace.edu>. NoWarWestchester would like a veteran to speak.
Respectfully submitted,
