Projects we endorse:

Mall 7 Defense Fund

This fund is for seven local protesters who were given a summons which demanded they stop handing out literature and reading the names of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan in front of Ulster County's only US Military recruiting station, The Kings Mall. The summons also asks for payment of $50,000 for proceeds the mall management claims were lost because of the weekly vigils.

Enlist for Peace

An Ulster County based anti-recruitment group that works on reducing militarism in high schools.

INTENTION

We offer information regarding the truth about military service and war. These veterans are available to come to your location. They offer insights and share first hand experiences that are valuable to youth, their parents, and educators, as well as the community at large. Our speakers will present facts and views that are necessary for a young person to consider in making an informed choice about military service.

PERSPECTIVE

We can provide historical perspective. Many of our speakers have been in combat and can speak honestly and realistically about the tragedies of war and its inevitable consequences. We've learned that no one can return from war without being profoundly affected, physically and emotionally.

OUR SPEAKERS

The Veterans for Peace Speakers Bureau is comprised of veterans of World War II, the wars in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the Iraq War. They are women and men who come from a cross-section of economic and social backgrounds and who share a strong belief that, before going off to war, young people owe it to themselves, and to their loved ones, to listen to those who "have been there." Our speakers draw on their personal experiences to accurately describe military life and war.

A film called "The Culture Wars," featuring NY VFP member Jay Wenk

Just contact Jay Wenk at 845 679 6970 or JayWenk@verizon.net. We only ask, if your can afford, transportation cost and a small stipend.

Jay Wenk (jaywenk@verizon.net) and Joan Keefe (VFP members, Catskill Mountain Chapter... 58), have been arrested three and two times respectively for handing out counter recruitment pamphlets in front of the King's Mall Army Recruitment Station. They want to prove that having the Federal facility on private property removes our 1st Ammendment Right to protest. Or perhaps that malls should not be private since they represent our Main Street today.

Joan Keefe, 84, left, and Jay Wenk, 79, pose in Wenk's Woodstock, N.Y., home on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2005. Wenk is wearing with the Combat Infantry Badge that he received while in the Army during World War II. Wenk also received the Purple Heart. Wenk and Keefe, were arrested twice for distributing anti-enlistment fliers outside a mall-based military recruiting center. With one round of trespassing charges dismissed this week on technical grounds, they intend to risk arrest again. At an age when many old soldiers fade away, they promise to keep up their anti-Iraq war leafletting. (AP Photo/ Jim McKnight)
